President signs Digital Security Bill into law

President Abdul Hamid has signed the Digital Security Bill 2018 amid widespread criticism.

The president’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin confirmed the consent of the president on Monday.

Last week, Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury sent the bill to the president for his approval.

The much-debated Digital Security Bill 2018 was passed by Jatiya Sangsad on September 19 with harsh provisions allowing police to frisk or arrest anyone without warrants.

Journalists and rights activists have expressed concerns about the new law, saying it was passed without addressing their concerns.
