Bangladesh to ban ‘Khat’

The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) has sent a proposal to the home ministry to ban ‘khat’, a New Psychotropic Substance (NPS) or a kind of drug in Bangladesh.

DNC’s Director General Mohammed Jamal Uddin Ahmed came up with the information at a press briefing at its head office, in Tejgaon, on Wednesday. 

He said that ‘Khat’ or New Psychotropic Substance (NPS) is a kind of alarming drugs. It has been already enlisted in the global drugs list. 

A proposal has been sent to the home ministry to ban the NPS in Bangladesh, he added.

He said, during drives and following a number of seizures, they have found  20-22 people involved in khat-smuggling. 

“We are conducting further investigations against them,” the DNC chief said.

Jamal said the department conducted special drives across the country between September 20 and 26. 

During this period, 559 cases were filed and 603 people were arrested, he said. 

The department also carried out a total of 59,506 drives from January to August, filed 8,406 cases and arrested 9,320 drug dealers.
