Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) has decided to impose ban on the production, marketing and import of energy drinks in the domestic market as excessive caffeine was found in the marketed energy drinks.
On July 29 last, in a meeting, the institute decided not to formulate any national standard in the title of ‘Energy Drinks’.
Besides, officials concerned in the meeting adopted a resolution that nobody can produce, import or marketing of energy drinks under the guise of carbonated beverages or any other title.
The decisions came at a meeting chaired by Dr. Md. Zahurul Haque, principal scientist officer and director (Ex) IFST, BCSIR and president of soft drink and beverage department committee.
In this connection, a high official who attended the meeting said around 145mg caffeine found per kg of the marketed soft drinks and 320mg caffeine found per kg of the marketed energy drinks.
The decision was taken to stop the intoxicating drinks in the name of energy drinks in the country’s market.
