King of Satay Challenge 2018 held today in conjunction with the Malaysia Day was a hit with budding satay masters of different races from all over the country with More than 80 satay masters from various hotels, restaurants, establishment and culinary schools participated in MICA’s King of Satay Challenge 2018 to showcase their talent and skills in preparation, grilling and serving techniques in both ways traditional and also modern way of serving satay in Malaysia gastronomique culinary industry.
The challenge a jointly partnership and organised by the School of Hospitality and Tourism (SOHT), SEGi University Kota Damansara, with the Malaysian Indian Chefs Association (MICA). The President Chef Ricky Narayanan and his committee team members who brings with him more than 25 years of experience in the culinary industry.
The satay grilling competition was fully powered by Chili Giling Terengganu & Malabar Cooking Oil and co-sponsored by Tamu Hotel & Suites, New World Hotel PJ, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), Malinja, Chakra Catering, Nourish, Mr. Banner, Linton University College, OMBAK Kitchen, Mas Awana Catering, California Milk Advisory Board, Eciatto, Cool Cream Milano, Adabi, Shinsegae-Mamee Food Service, Ajinomoto Malaysia Berhad, Powerchef, Flavorista Sdn. Bhd , Georik Equipments, Persatuan Kebajikan Amanah Persaudaraan Negeri Selangor, Mathavi Tailoring, XLNC Event Management, Bickfords, RAUCH, Eciatto Sdn. Bhd and Paramount. This event is to promote the traditional and fusion style of serving satay, as this is part of The Chili Terengganu our main sponsor marketing initiative. The event was attended by more than 200 visitors who witnessed the cookout of satay grilling travelling flavours surrounding the venue of Segi University Kota Damansara, Chef Bonnie Lopez the Head of School from SOHT said “this is the platform for culinary industry chefs to showcase their talents and elevate to the next level”.
About 14 professional judges, including the Chief Judge, Master Chef Sabri Hassan, Executive Chef from Tamu Hotel Kuala Lumpur, was impressed by the aspiring talents and skilful participants who handled the cooking process, preparation and grilling methods excellently. Master Chef Sabri Hassan had given great support, encouragement and mentorship advices to all the chefs who perticipanted.
Satay a flavourful Malaysian local favourite inspired dish consisting of small pieces of meat grilled over charcoal on a skewer and served with a spiced sauce that typically contains peanuts.Participants were judged based on the completion time, food hygiene, teamwork, presentation skills, and creativity in raw materials and seasonings applications.
The champion, the Ultimate Satay King Master from New World Hotel Petaling Jaya namely Muhammad Afiq bin Abdul Malek and Nur Effendy bin Mohammad Yusoff walked home with cash prize of RM 700, trophy, certificates, hampers sponsored by Adabi and goodies bag sponsored by Chili Giling Terengganu & Malabar Cooking Oil. Meanwhile Nur Aina binti Mohd Fadil & Shamsul Iqmar Shafiq bin Shamsul Hairi and Muhammad Nur Hakimi bin Harith & Aiman bin Ismail begged 2nd and 3rd place respectively, both teams were from UITM Teknologi Mara Puncak Alam.
The collaboration between SEGi Kota Damansara and MICA aimed to provide opportunities for the teenagers to showcase their talents in culinary arts, at the same time to increase the awareness on healthy and delicious cooking.
Celebrity Chef Shirley Lo from PCPI Surabaya Indonesia added that “the competition like these are a great place to meet the younger and older generation of chefs as well as to look out for new trends in the food & beverage industry,” she said. “MICA and SOHT had done an excellent job in getting the ball rolling and hope to collaborate more with them in the future with more culinary activities and events,”.
