Dhaka University on Monday filed a leave-to-appeal petition before the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the High Court order that directed the university authorities to take steps to organise DUCSU elections by six months.
Modhumaloti, advocate-on-record for the State filed the petition.
Advocate Monjil Morshed who filed the writ seeking Dhaka University Central Students’ Union elections (DUCSU) polls confirmed the matter to Jago News.
Prior to this, on January 18 last, the High Court ordered the Dhaka university authorities to organise the DUCSU polls by next six months.
Besides, the court directed the Home Affairs ministry to maintain law and order during the polls.
Earlier on March 11 in 2012, on behalf of 31 students, Advocate Monjil Morshed served a legal notice to Vice-chancellor, Proctor and Treasurer of Dhaka University.
Later, Monjil Morshid filed the writ on behalf of 25 students as the DU authorities didn’t response to the notice.
In the writ petition, it was said that the decision that DUCSU committee would run the organization for a year following the election, was taken in a meeting on May 27 in 1998 chaired by DU Ex-VC Professor Azad Chowdhury.
But, the existing committee will run the DUCSU if the election do not hold by three months after the expiry of the committee. However, the DUCSU had been fudged following the decision.
On the other hand, the university Vice chancellor Dr. Professor Akhtaruzzaman said that a voter list would be formulated by October this year and the polls would be held by March, 2019. He said these while talking to reporters after a meeting of Paribesh Parishad on DUCSU polls on Sunday last.
