A total of 142 prisoners were released from Sylhet central jail on Sunday night.
The prime minister recently issued a directive for releasing the prisoners, who were serving in the jail for minor offence, considering them from humanitarian ground and if they confessed their offences to the court and promised to be honest in future.
Senior Superintendent of Sylhet Central Jail Abdul Jalil said that they released 142 prisoners in the morning, who were accused of various small offences, including suspected involvement in stealing, snatching and prostituting, to different courts, including the chief metropolitan magistrate court and the district session judge’s court.
The courts passed the bail orders against the accused following which they were released from the jail in the afternoon, he said.
Earlier, Home Ministry Secretary (protection and service) Farid Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury and law ministry secretary Abu Saleh Shiekh Md Zahirul Haque visited the central jail as a prior step to select the accused to release.
