Four killed, 16 injured in Mumbai blaze

Four people have died and sixteen people have been injured after a fire broke out at a residential high-rise building in Mumbai, NDTV reports.

The fire service says the blaze has been brought under control and many residents trapped in the top floor of Crystal Tower were rescued with a crane.

The fire was reported to the fire brigade control room at 8:32am, an official said.

The smoke from the blaze spread quickly and residents were trapped in the staircases of the building, Mumbai Fire Brigade chief PS Rahangdale told news agency PTI.

Eight fire engines, four water tankers, police and electrical mechanics were involved in the firefighting and rescue operation.

An investigation has been opened into the cause of the fire. Sources told NDTV that a preliminary investigation suggests the building was not following fire safety regulations.
