Man jailed for attack on Suu Kyi’s home

Win Naing, who was arrested and charged with using a Molotov cocktail in an attempt to set fire to the residence of Myanmar's State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment by Bahan township court in Yangon on Monday, reports The Myanmar Times. 

According to the facts of the case, the accused lit a glass bottle containing a flammable liquid and threw it into the residential compound of the State Counsellor at No. 54/56, University Avenue, No.1 Shwe Taung Kyar ward, Bahan, at about 6:30am on February 1.

An area near the compound’s security post caught fire and a report was lodged at Bahan police station under section 436 of the penal code. 

Thanks to CCTV footage of the incident, Win Naing was apprehended in Dagon North township within 24 hours.

The presiding judge sentenced Win Naing to five years’ imprisonment under section 436 for causing mischief by fire or explosive substance with the intent to destroy a home.
