Road accidents kill 52 across Bangladesh

At least 52 people were killed and 150 others were injured in separate road accidents across the country over the past 24 hours during the return journey from Eid holidays.

Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (Bangladesh passengers’ welfare association) disclosed the report on Saturday.

The passengers’ welfare association said in a press release it formed monitoring cell to record accidents on the road and waterways from Friday afternoon to 12pm on Saturday.

The association for the welfare of the passengers demanded to give compensation to the families of the victims. According to the report:

Of them, 19 people were killed in Gaibandha while 6 in Rangpur, 2 each in Gopalganj, Sirajganj, Natore and Faridpur.

In Gaibandha, 16 people were killed and 40 others injured as a bus hit a roadside tree at Bashkata area near Brac intersection in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha in the early hours.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Palashbari Arif Hossain said a Syedpur-bound bus from Dhaka dashed a tree on Dhaka-Rangpur highway as its driver lost control over the steering around 4:15am.

In Rangpur, 6 people were killed and 5 others injured as a sand-laden truck hit a passenger-bus at Soleyashah bazar area in Rangpur sadar upazila in the wee hours of Friday.

Of them, two people were identified as Nishat, 20, and Sazzad, 19, hailing from Dinajpur.

The injured people were admitted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital.

In Gopalganj, 5 people were killed and 3 others injured as bus hit a van, a motorcycle and a three-wheeler after its driver lost control over the steering at Ghonapara bazar in Kashiani upazila in the morning.

Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Kashiani Police Station, confirmed the matter to Jago News.

In Sirajganj, 2 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck at Bhuiyagati area in Raiganj upazila in the early hours.

The deceased are truck driver Sharif Fakir, 35, son of Jasim Uddin and its helper Rafiqul Islam, 30, son of Dhuku Miah.

In Natore, 2 people were killed and 3 others injured as a sand-laden truck hit an auto-rickshaw in the early hours. 

The accident took place in front of the Komla Super Market at Alypur area in the city.

The deceased are Sulta Debnath, wife of Mongol Debnath and Kanai Debnath, son of Kartik Chandra Debnath.

The injured people were admitted to Natore Adhunik Sadar Hospital.

In Faridpur, bus driver and its helper were killed and 20 others injured when a bus plunged into roadside ditch after its driver lost control over the steering in the morning.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately.

The injured people were admitted to Faridpur Medical College and Hospital and Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.
