About 51.13 of the internet users who fall victims to cyber crimes in the country are women while the percentage of male victims is 48.87, according to a study.
Cyber Crime Awareness Foundation (CCAF) conducted the study titled ‘Trend of Cyber Crime in Bangladesh’ in the last two years, said a press release here today.
About 73.71 percent of the female victims are aged between 18 and 30 while 10.52 percent are below 18 years, 12.77 percent aged from 30 to 45 years and 3 percent are above 45, said the study.
The study also said that most of the cyber crimes are taking place through the social media. In the social media, women are becoming victims of the cyber crimes more than their male counterparts.
The type of crimes occurring in social media include propaganda through fake accounts, publishing distorted pictures, hacking accounts, cheating through online shopping, cheating through email, giving threats and spreading pornography, the study added.
The study, moreover, said that about 30 percent of the victims do not know how to take legal action against the cyber crimes while 25 percent is reluctant to go to law enforcement agencies for lodging complaints thinking that it may not yield any result.
However, the study suggested conducting awareness campaigns on using ICT, increasing institutional capacity and involving stockholders concerned with the ICT to prevent the cyber crimes in the country.
