EC sets June 26 for GCC polls

The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday declared June 26 as the fresh date for holding Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) elections, reports BSS.

The date was fixed at a meeting of the EC with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda in the chair, EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed said.

He said the election will be held on June 26 and the formal electioneering will resume on June 18.

On Thursday, the Appellate Division asked the EC to hold the GCC Election by June 28, overruling a stay imposed by the High Court.

The Appellate Division passed the order after hearing three separate appeal petitions filed by the Election Commission and two mayoral candidates-- Zahangir Alam of Awami League and Hasan Uddin Sarkar of BNP.

The High Court (HC) on May 6 stayed for three months the polls to Gazipur City Corporation, issuing a rule on the authorities concerned to explain as to why inclusion of six mouzas (areas) of Savar in GCC shall not be declared illegal.

Shimulia Union Parishad Chairman Azharul Islam Suruj filed the writ as a gazette notification was issued on March 4, including six mouzas - Dakkhin Borobari, Domna, Shibrampur, Pashchim Panishail, Panishail and Domnag - of his union in Gazipur City Corporation.

The Gazipur city election was scheduled to be held on May 15 where more than 11 lakh voters were supposed to cast their ballots.
