Over two years ago, Robert Downey Jr. promised a third Sherlock Holmes movie would finally start filming.
Finally, years after the sequel A Game of Shadows reached cinemas, Warner Bros. has announced Sherlock Holmes 3 and confirmed a release date, Independent.com.uk.
Both Downey and side-kick Jude Law will return to the series for the third instalment, out 25 December 2020.
Whether Guy Ritchie will return to helm the movie remains unknown – the director is currently working on Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin, while reports recently circulated that Ritchie was returning to his roots with the British gangster flick Toff Guys.
“When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook,” Downey said in 2016. “It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m so excited about it.”
The actor said that the busy schedules of himself, Ritch, and Law had delayed the follow-up to 2011’s A Game of Shadows, itself a sequel to 2009’s Sherlock Holmes.
Downey recently appeared in the record-breaking Avengers: Infinity War, reprising the role of Iron Man. The actor will next play Dr. Dolittle in The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle. Law, meanwhile, will play a young Albus Dumledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequel.
