HC stays GCC polls for 3 months

The High Court has stayed the polls of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) for three months following a writ petition challenging the election.

A High Court bench of Justice Naima Haydar and Justice Zafar Ahmed on Sunday passed the order after hearing the petition which was filed by ABM Ajharul Islam Suruj, Chairman of Simulia union under the city corporation area.

Confirming the news, Deputy Attorney General Md Mokhlesur Rahman said that ABM Ajharul Islam Suruj, Chairman of Simulia union filed a writ petition challenging the inclusion of six Mouzas of Simulia union into the electoral roll of Gazipur city corporation.

After hearing the petition, the High Court passed the stay order to the polls of City Corporation for six months, he added.

The election for the post of Mayor, General ward & Reserved ward councilors of Gazipur City Corporation was scheduled to be held on May 15. 

The city corporation is comprised of 57 Wards and 19 reserved Wards. A total of 11, 64,425 voters were counted under the city corporation area ahead of the election.

On March 4 last, a gazette was issued on the demarcation area of the City Corporation in which Dokkhin (south) Borobari, Doman, Sibrampur, Poschim(west) Panishail, Dokkhin (South) Panishaile and Domnag of Simulia Union were included under Gazipur city Corporation.
