International Midwife Day Saturday

The International Day of the Midwife (IDM) 2018 will be observed in the country tomorrow as elsewhere in the world, BSS reported.

The day is being observed as a mark of recognition to the contribution of midwives to saving lives of women, adolescent girls and newborns, sometimes under very difficult circumstances.

To mark the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages.

In his message, President M Abdul Hamid today laid emphasis on increasing the numbers of trained and skilled midwives in the country to reduce mother and child mortality rates at desired level.

"I believe it is possible to check deaths of mother and children through creating huge mass awareness, educating mothers and building skilled midwives," he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said, "I believe proper planning and coordinated management and huge mass awareness can play an effective role in resolving health problems of mothers and children."

She said her government has established 18,000 community clinics and union health centers at grass root level to reach healthcare services at doorsteps of people.

Three years long diploma in midwifery courses are running at 38 government and 16 private Nursing Educational Institutions, she added.

Referring to this year's theme of the day 'Midwives Leading the Way with Quality Care', the President and the Prime Minister said this theme is very time-befitting.

They wished all success of the day.
