Sri Lanka Cricket has generated a whopping Rs. 940 million (Rs. 94 crore) in profit by successfully hosting the Nidahas Trophy Cricket Tournament in March.
This is 480 percent more than the forecasted profit of Rs. 195 million, making it one of the most successful commercial ventures ever undertaken by Sri Lanka Cricket.
“This was the most successful Tri-nation cricket series ever held in Sri Lanka,” said SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala addressing media on Friday morning.
The tournament in total generated a total revenue of Rs. 1.38 billion as oppose to the projected income of Rs. 650 million. Out of the total revenue. Rs. 1.26 billion was derived by selling international media rights and sponsorship deals while the rest being the revenue generated locally with a significant ticket sales revenue running up to Rs. 80 million.
The Nidahas Trophy T20 tournament played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo saw India clinching the title beating Bangladesh in a terrific final after hosts Sri Lanka made a first round exit.
