The fifth death anniversary of former President Zillur Rahman, a veteran politician, a Language Movement hero, an organiser of the Liberation War and one of the close associates of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, is being observed today.
Zillur Rahman died of old-age complications at a Singapore hospital on March 20, 2013.
He started his political career as a volunteer of Awami League and was inducted as the 19th president of the country on February 12, 2009. He discharged his responsibilities as general secretary of Awami League for 12 years for five different terms, reports BSS.
Bangladesh Awami League, its associate bodies, other like-minded organisations and socio-cultural and professional bodies have chalked out various programmes to pay homage to the late leader.
The programmes include: placing wreaths at Banani grave of the President, milad mahfil, Quran Khwani, doa-munajat and discussions in the capital and elsewhere across the country.
AL will place wreath at his Banani graveyard in the capital and a milad mahfil will be arranged across the country. His family members will visit his grave and offer prayers there.
Bangabandhu Shangskritik Jote will organize a memorial meeting at Jatiya Press Club tomorrow where Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam would be the chief guest.
