The attacker of noted writer and professor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) Professor Dr Muhammed Zafar Iqbal has been identified.
He is Fayzur Rahman, a resident of Sheikhpara area near Kumargaon Bus Stand adjacent to the university, hailing from Kaliar Kapon village in Derai upazila of Sunamganj, said commander of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 Lieutenant Colonel Haider Azad Ahmed.
His father Atikul Islam is a teacher of Tukerbazar Mahila Madrasa in Sylhet.
However, police conducted a drive at Sheikhpara area on Saturday night and detained Fayzur’s uncle Fazlur Rahman Fazlu, joint convener of Krishak League of Sunamganj district unit, for interrogation.
Zafar Iqbal, who was seriously injured in the knife attack on the campus on Saturday afternoon, is now undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.
Soon after the incident, SUST students caught the attacker from the Academic Building-A and gave him a mass beating before handing him over to police.
