The Flag Hoisting Day commemorating the hoisting of the first national flag of independent Bangladesh was observed on Friday with due honour on Dhaka University campus.
On March 2, 1971, on behalf of Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad, the then vice-president of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) ASM Abdur Rab hoisted the first national flag of independent Bangladesh atop the DU Arts Building.
DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated the function by playing national anthem on Bat-Tala premises adjacent to Arts Building on the campus.
Dr Akhtaruzzaman flanked by DU Pro-VC (Academic) Professor Nasreen Ahmad and others hoisted the national flag of Bangladesh, reports BSS.
While addressing the programme as chief guest, Prof Akhtaruzzaman expressed profound respect to Father of The Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
"March, the month of independence, is very important for many reasons and it is mainly significant because of the historic 7th March speech of Bangabandhu," he said.
Praising the bravery of the then student leaders, Professor Akhtaruzzaman said, "The revolutionary students first hoisted the flag on this day on Arts Building premises which was an inspiration of the liberation war. The students of then Iqbal Hall (now Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall) played a valiant role at that time."
DU VC urged the new generation to become respectful to the history, culture and heritage.
Later, a cultural programme was held organised by the Department of Music of DU on the significance of the Flag Hoisting Day.
