One person was killed and more than 50 people were injured in a clash over waz mahfil at Jointapur Upazila in Sylhet on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Mozammel Hossain, a student of Haripur Madrasa in the upazila.
The injured were admitted to Jointapur Upazila Health Complex.
The followers of Sunni ideology (a Islamic religious group) organised a waz mahfil at Ambari area around 11pm.
At one stage, they engaged in a clash with Wahhabi ideology followers over a dispute, leaving the madrasa student dead on the spot and injured more than 50 people.
In this connection, Md. Moienul Jakir, officer-in-charge of Jointapur Police Station, said: “The situation is now under control. Additional police have been deployed in the spot to control untoward situation.”
