Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque has urged Myanmar to come forward with utmost sincerity to implement different bilateral agreements for the repatriation of Rohingyas who crossed into Bangladesh fleeing the violence in their homeland.
“Bilateral efforts are continuing between Bangladesh and Myanmar to resolve the Rohingya crisis. Myanmar must come forward with sincerity to implement different bilateral agreements with Bangladesh to end the crisis,” he said in a lecture on “Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis: Bangladesh Response” at Bangabandhu auditorium of the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York.
Permanent representatives of different countries to the United Nations attended the function, according an official release issued on Friday.
Ambassadors and representatives of over 50 countries including India, Russia, China, Netherlands, Peru, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Canada, UK, Oman, Singapore, Vatican, Maldives and Malaysia were present at the meeting. OIC Ambassador to the UN Ambassador Aghshin Mehdiyev was also present on the occasion.
The foreign secretary said over one million forcibly displaced Rohingya community people are staying in Bangladesh and the number is increasing regularly.
Bangladesh wants the repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to their homeland with safety, security and complete dignity, he added.
Shahidul Haque urged the international community to keep mounting pressure on Myanmar for the safe return of the Rohingya people to their homeland and to ensure sustainable solution to the crisis.
The secretary said if the international community fails to come forward to resolve the crisis, they must have to bear its responsibility.
In his address, Shahidul Haque upheld the generous role of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to provide humanitarian support to the persecuted Rohingya people who took refuge to Bangladesh since August 25 last.
He also highlighted that safety and security, socio-economy and environment of Bangladesh have been facing challenges because of providing humanitarian supports to the Rohingya people.
The secretary also said Bangladesh remains alert so that no vested quarter can take advantage of the vulnerability.
Earlier, Shahidul Haque attended another discussion organized by the International Peace Institute in New York on the same issue.
