The Jatiya Sangsad here today passed the "Poet Nazrul Institute Bill, 2018" in an amended form aimed at collecting literary and cultural works of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, its preservation and ensuring proper campaign at all levels.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor moved the bill in the House, which was passed unanimously by voice votes with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair, BSS reported.
Piloting the bill, the minister said the proposed bill will give a modern and time-befitting look and the new bill was made annulling the Nazrul Institute Ordinance, 1984.
Referring to the functions of the Institute, he said the institute would be responsible for promoting the study of poet's works, collecting and compiling his songs, and preserving and publishing those.The institute will make necessary arrangement for research and publication of the Nazrul's literature, organise conferences, lectures, debates and seminars on matters relating to contributions of the poet on music, literature and in other fields, and also set up library of books, records, tapes and other preservative ensemble relating to Nazrul works, the object of the bill added.
According to the bill, there will be a head office of the institute in Dhaka to run it and the authorities concerned would be able to set up its branch office wherever it is necessary as per the permission of the government.
The overall activities of the institute will be governed by a board which will be accountable to the government in all aspects.
