BNP men attack policemen, vandalize prison van

A group of BNP activists today launched an attack on policemen and vandalized a prison van near the Kadam Foara crossing in front of the Supreme Court as BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was returning home after her scheduled appearance before a special court set up in the old city's Bakshibazar area.

"The BNP activists attacked the security personnel without any provocation and vandalized the prison van . . . they snatched away two fellow activists who were detained from the scene during the violence," Dhaka Metropolitan Police's deputy commissioner Maruf Hossian Sardar told BSS.

He said several police personnel including an additional deputy commissioner Ashraful Azim suffered injuries in the attack at around 3:30 PM as Begum Zia was returning home after her court appearance linked to the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

"We always deal with utter patience their (BNP) processions but yet they staged the attack," Sardar said.

Police later arrested 40 persons for their suspected involvement in the attack to be exposed to legal procedures for creating anarchy, the official said.
