Customs intelligence early today held two Malaysia-bound passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and recovered huge foreign currency from their possessions.
“Ariful Islam of Paikpara, Mirpur, and Md Shamim Dhali of Shukrabad, Mohammadpur, were waiting in row for checking in on Malindo Air flight OD-165, when customs intelligence members challenged them. Primarily they declined having any illegal things with them. Later the customs members recovered the currencies hidden inside their pants," a Customs Intelligence release said, reports BSS.
“Of the currencies, 60,000 Saudi Riyal and 421 Malaysian Ringgit were recovered from Ariful, 68,500 Saudi Riyal and 135 Malaysian Ringgit were recovered from Shamim. The estimated worth of the total currencies are Taka 27, 87, 639," the release added.
Of the two, Ariful travelled to Malaysia seven times and Shamim 10 times in 2017. Both of them confessed that they are in luggage business and are associates.
The two were shown arrested under Customs and Money Laundering Prevention Act.
