Eminent singer Shammi Akhtar passed away on the way to a city hospital this afternoon.
The 62-year old singer breathed her last around 4pm on the way to BIRDEM Hospital, family sources said.
Shammi has been suffering from breast cancer for the last five years.
The singer of popular songs like 'Dhaka Shahor Aisha Amar Asha Puraiche', 'Ami Jemon Achi Temon Robo Bow Hobo Nare', 'Chithi Dio Protidin', left behind his husband, two sons, a host of relatives, friends, well-wishers and followers to mourn his death.
Shammi trained in music from her young age under the tutelage of Ustad Goura Babu in Barisal.
Despite having a singing career since the 1970s, Shammi came to the mainstream attention in 1980 with the release of her most popular song 'Dhaka Shohor Aisha Amar' at the film "Ashikkhitha".
