2 writ petitions filed seeking stay order on DNCC by-polls

Two voters of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) filed two writ petitions on Tuesday with the High Court seeking stay order on the upcoming DNCC mayoral by-polls.  

A joint High Court bench of Justice Naima Haydar and Justice Zafar Ahmed heard the writ and set Wednesday to pass the order.

Advocate Ahsan Habib Bhuia on behalf of Ataur Rahman, chairman of Bhatara Union and Jahangir Alam, chairman of Veraid Union of Dhaka North City Corporation area filed two petitions seeking stay on the by-polls for the mayoral post of DNCC.

Confirming the news, Bhuia said that five people including secretary of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives (LGRD) Ministry, secretary of Election Commission (EC) were made respondents to the writ petition.

The by-polls for the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) were scheduled to be held on February 26.

The EC fixed January 18 as the last date for filing nomination paper while scrutiny will be held on January 21, 22.

The closing date for nomination paper withdrawal is January 29.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last.
