‘Imran Khan is the Sunny Leone of Pakistani politics’

As reactions to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan’s third potential marriage continue, PML-N Senator Mushahidullah Khan also jumped the bandwagon on Monday, comparing the former with the famed but scandalous Bollywood actor Sunny Leone.

Despite rejecting the news on Saturday when it first broke, Imran-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) issued a statement admitting that he had indeed proposed marriage to Bushra Maneka, a 50-year-old lady Imran had been visiting for spiritual guidance for quite some time in a remote town near Sahiwal.

“Does one eye their hosts when they visit them,” the senator asked before adding, “This makes Imran Khan the Sunny Leone of Pakistan’s politics.”

Mushahidullah was apparently referring to the PTI chief’s proposal to someone who was believed to be his ‘spiritual guru’.

His remarks coincided with that of Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh chapter chief Shahi Syed who said on Sunday, “Getting married is Imran Khan’s right, however, eyeing up one’s spiritual guru with such intention is not an appropriate thing to do.”

Earlier, while the PTI leaders, by and large, have chosen to remain silent on the news, arch-rivals Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) seem to have capitalised on the situation well.

The cricketer-turned-politician, in the meantime, has assured his supporters that he will make an announcement once he does tie the knot with Bushra.

The PTI chief was previously married twice. He married Jemima Goldsmith, a British socialite, in 1995. The relationship ended in divorce in 2004. He then married journalist Reham Khan in 2015, but the marriage ended after just 10 months.

Bushra in briefThe PTI leader had first met with Bushra, a mother of five, shortly before the 2015 by-election in Lodhran for the NA-154 seat.

She is around 50 years old and belongs to influential Wattoo family in Punjab’s Pakpattan district.

She has recently divorced her former husband Khawar Farid Maneka, a Customs officer and a son of former federal minister Ghulam Farid Maneka.

Bushra’s two sons - Ibrahim and Musa - after graduating from Aitchison College in Lahore are currently getting higher education from abroad.

Mehru, Bushra’s eldest of the three daughters is the daughter-in-law of Punjab MPA Mian Atta Muhammad Maneka.
