Suspected robber killed in Khilgaon ‘gunfight’

An alleged robber was killed in a gunfight with police in city's Khilgaon area early today.

The slain person was identified as Md Billal Hossain alias Selim, 45, police confirmed and said he was wanted in at least 10 cases filed with different police stations.

Three police personnel were also injured in the incident. Law enforcers seized a shotgun and five bullets from the spot.

Billal was arrested in the capital's Demra area last evening, said Md Mahbub Rahman, Sub Inspector (SI) of Khilgaon Police Station.

Police along with Billal went to Mostafa Mazir Mor area to arrest his cohorts around 2 am, he said.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the presumed criminal opened fire on them, prompting police to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.

Later, police found Billal with bullet wounds from the spot. But his accomplices managed to escape the scene. He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead around 3.15 am, the SI said.

Three injured policemen are - Inspector Jahangir Kabir Khan, SI Nasiruddin Tuhin and Constable Hasan Ali.
