CJ’s resignation letter reaches Bangabhaban

The resignation letter of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has reached Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President Abdul Hamid.

Joynal Abedin, press secretary to the president on Saturday confirmed the matter to the Jagonews24.com.

Earlier, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader at a program of Dhaka University said: “If he did send a letter of resignation, it would be to the president. As far as I know no such letter has reached the president.”

On 1 August, the Supreme Court published the full verdict on the annulment of the 16th amendment to the constitution.

The amendment established parliament’s power to remove the SC judges for their misconduct and incapacity but the verdict scrapped such provision.

Cabinet members and ruling Awami League MPs lambasted at the chief justice SK Sinha for some of his observations published in the full verdict. They also demanded his resignation or removal from the post the chief justice.

Sinha, who was appointed as chief justice on Jan 17, 2015, will end his term on Jan 31, 2018.

According to the constitution, he will continue in the post until then, barring removal or resignation.

On Oct 13, he left for Australia, where his daughter currently resides. His wife joined him a few days later.

On Friday, the media learned that Chief Justice Sinha had left Australia to visit his other daughter in Canada. News of his resignation spread soon after.
