No connection between 16th amendment verdict review, CJ’s return: AG

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam said there is no connection between the review petition against Supreme Court judgment scraping 16th amendment of the constitution and the return of Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha to the country.“There is no guaranty that the chief justice will be able to observe his duty on his return. Observing his (chief justice) duty will be far cry if his colleague judges at the Appellate Division refrain from sitting on the same bench with him,” the attorney general said on Sunday. The chief state counsel said these while addressing a press briefing held at his office this morning.“Proceedings for review will continue at its own speed. We have been allowed four weeks time for issuing gazette on lower court judges’ service rules. I have informed the apex court today that the law minister will probably hold discussion with the court on Thursday in this regard,” the attorney general added.Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha is now in Australia on a month-long leave. The government has given Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, the senior-most judge in line, the responsibility to act as chief justice in Justice Sinha’s absence.
