The 89th birthday of renowned Poet Shamsur Rahman is being observed on Monday in a befitting manner across the country.
On the occasion, different socio-cultural organisations have chalked up elaborate programmes, including placing wreaths at his grave at Banani, discussions, recitation sessions and musical soirees.
Bangla Academy will organise a discussion titled 'Shamsur Rahmaner Kobitar Desh' at its auditorium at 4 pm where Dr Tareque Reza, professor of Jahangirnagar University, will present the keynote paper.
Professor Begum Akthar Kamal and Dr Anu Hossain will address the discussion while Bangla Academy Director General Professor Shamsuzzaman Khan will chair it.
Boinews, a co-organisation of Sraboni Prokashoni, will arrange a discussion titled 'Kobitay Shamsur Rahman' at Kobi Sufia Kamal auditorium of National Museum at 5pm. Muhammad Nurul Huda will preside over the discussion.
Besides, different socio-cultural organisations will also observe the birth anniversary through various programmes across the country.
His poems largely feature the struggle of country's people for independence and Liberation War.
'Barnomala Amar Dukhini Barnomala', 'Asader Shirt', 'Tomake Pawar Jonno Hey Swadhinata' and 'Udbhat Uter Pithe Cholechhe Swadesh' are some his works depicting various aspects of national transitions at different times.
The number of books by poet Shamsur Rahman which were published in his lifetime is 98, including four novels, 67 of poems, one of short story, two of child literature and six translations.
He made his professional debut as a journalist of the daily Morning Sun in 1957 and later he worked for Dainik Bangla, where he also served as its chief editor.
