In the wee hours of Sunday, a 35-year-old chartered accountant from Thane, a city in the state of Maharashtra of India, allegedly murdered 14 of his family members with a knife and then hung himself to death. The deceased include eight children, his wife, his three sisters, and his parents. The accused has been identified as Hansil Warekar, who resides with his family in a single storied bungalow in Ghodbadar road, police said, Indian Express reports.According to the police, there was a party organised at the Warekars residence on Saturday night, post which, most of his relatives stayed over.Ashutosh Dumbare, joint commissioner of Thane Police said that the incident is believed to have taken place between 2-2.30 am.“Prima facie evidence suggests that the accused bolted all the doors of the house and murdered his family while they were asleep with a knife that we found near his body. The accused then hung himself after killing his family. There were three rooms in the house, while he was in a room with his wife and two daughters on the first floor, his parents and sisters were in separate rooms on the ground floor,” Dumbare said.According to Dumbare the police was made aware of the matter when one of Hansil’s sisters – Subia Bharmar – had shouted out for help.“Hansil slit the upper part of this victim’s throat, she survived the attack and screamed for help. The survivor’s in-laws, who were in the neighbouring house heard her cries and tried opening the door, but it was locked. The in-laws broke open the grill of a window on the ground floor and entered the house. It was then that the police was alerted of the incident,” Dumbare said. The sole survivor of the attacks has been admitted to Thane’s Titan hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for her injuries.“We have recorded the survivor’s statement. However, the exact cause that triggered her brother to kill her family and himself is still unclear. Our investigation is still underway,” said Dumbare. The police said that the Hansil worked with a private company as a chartered accountant handling their finances.“The family appears to be well known in the area. Initial inquiry does not suggest that there was any trouble within the family to coerce Hansil to take this extreme step,” said a senior Thane Police officer.Kaasarwadvali police are investigating the case.
