Jamaat chief among nine leaders arrested

Detectives arrested nine leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, including its chief Maqbul Ahmad, during a raid on a house at Sector 7 of Uttara in the capital around 9pm on Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (detective branch) Nazmul Alam confirmed the news of the arrest and said that the Jamaat leaders were holding a meeting to create anarchy.

The arrested also include Jamaat secretary general Shafiqur Rahman, nayebe amir Mia Golam Parwar, Chittagong city amir Mohammad Shahjahan, secretary Nazrul Islam and Chittagong south district amir Zafar Sadek, central Jamaat staff Nazrul Islam.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami elected Maqbul Ahmad as its ameer for three years on October 17, 2016.
