With a view to raising awareness on "Safe Internet" usage, mobile phone operator Grameenphone (GP), in partnership with BRAC, is going to expand awareness campaign to another 50,000 school students.

The campaign has mainly been designed to aware the school children of safe internet navigation as well as teach them some of the "to do" and "not to do".

"Grameenphone considers it a responsibility to ensure that people, especially children, get the best out of the digital technology at their disposal," said GP Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Mahmud Hossain at press conference today at BRAC Inn, said a press release.

"Our safe internet program, which is currently in its fourth year, is targeted towards achieving this objective, and we believe spread of the Internet and its benefit among people will help in reducing inequality," he added.

In the partnership this year, they have set an aim to reach a further 50,000 children in 250 schools around Bangladesh.

GP has so far reached 80,000 children in 500 schools across Bangladesh with the program through activations in schools and distribution of guidebooks on the safe and responsible use of internet. BRAC was also the partner of the earlier initiative.

GP and Telenor Group have selected Child Online Safety as part of their activities to support Sustainable Development Goals declared by United Nations. The initiative aims to empower children to make the right decision on how to interact and engage through the internet confidently and responsibly.

Asif Saleh, Senior Director, Strategy, Communication and Empowerment at BRAC, said: "We believe that together we will be able to reach the target number of 50,000 this year so that our future leaders have a better chance of growing up educated and socially responsible."

The event was also attended by other high officials from Grameenphone and BRAC.
