Eastern Bank Limited on Thursday provided compensation to its clients whose money was withdrawn from ATM booths in the city by using fake cards.The EBL authority formally handed over cheques to its five affected clients out of 24 at a function at Bangladesh Bank. The compensation amount of Tk 17.53 lakh for the remaining affected clients was paid through their respective accounts.A gang of fraudsters installed skimmer, a small device that scan and store credit card data from magnetic stripes, at four ATMs - two of the Eastern Bank Ltd, and one each of United Commercial Bank Ltd and City Bank.The gang later produced clone cards and withdrew a total of Tk 20.16 lakh from ATM booths. Of the three banks, the EBL alone lost around Tk 17.53 lakhs of its 20 customers.
