Drop police verification for issuance passport: TIB

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) recommended the government to drop the system of police verification and attestation of documents and photographs for issuance of passports as the system is the root cause of corruption in the sector.“Each person has to pay Tk. 797 in bribe to Special Branch (SB) police for police verification,” according to a study conducted by TIB.Researcher Shahnoor Rahman presented the findings of the study at a press conference organized by TIB at its auditorium at the Midas Centre in Dhanmondi of the capital city.The study found that 76.2 percent service recipients were victims of corruption and irregularities while going through police verification after applying for a new passport.On the other hand, 55.2 percent people were victims of corruption and irregularities in receiving passport service. Of them, 35.3 percent were victims of bribe or giving money beyond legal means, 27 percent victims of excessive delay and 2.3 percent victims of negligence of officials.Apart from that, each person has to pay Tk. 2,221 on average to get service from passport office, according to the study.
