Customs intelligence personnel held a man along with 16.24 kilograms of gold worth about Taka eight crore from Baitul Mukarram Jewellery Market in the city this evening.
"We have arrested one Rabiul Islam,35, son of Nurul Islam of Purba Boalkhali Village under Sadar Upazila of Cox's Bazar this evening along with 140 gold bars weighting 16.24 kilograms from Baitul Mukarram Jewellery Market," assistant director Md Shahiduzzaman of customs intelligence told BSS.
Bangladesh Jewellery Samity assisted the customs intelligence to capture Rabiul, who is believed to be a carrier and went to the market to sell those.
The estimated cost of the seized gold bars is Taka 8 crore, he also said.
Two separate cases, one under Money Laundering Act and another under Customs Act will be lodged with Paltan Police Station to this end.
