Second phase gas price hike for domestic use is illegal: HC

The High Court on Sunday declared the second phase gas price hike, which came into effect on June 1, for domestic use illegal.A bench of Justice Zinat Ara and Justice Kazi Md. Ezarul Haq Akon delivered the verdict after completion of the final hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.A consumer had to pay Tk 900 for using a single burner and Tk 950 for double burner for the months of June and July.Following the high court verdict, a consumer will have to pay Tk 750 for single burner and Tk 800 for double burner from August 1.However, the government will have to not refund the money, which was collected for the months of June and July, to the consumers.On February 23, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) chairman Manowar Islam made a public announcement hiking gas price in two phases. The first phase came into effect on March 1.Mobasser Hossain, the convener of Consumer Complain Handling National Committee of Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB), filed a writ petition challenging the price hike in two phases in a year.
