The High Court (HC) today ordered Bangladesh Rural Electrocution Board (BREB) to pay Taka 50 lakh as compensation to a Shariatpur youth, who got electrocuted by a snapped live wire, resulting in amputation of both his arms.A High Court division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed order today, asking BREB to pay the money to Siam Khan within the next 30 days.According the case documents, transmission line of BREB in village Pashchim Bijari was snapped in a storm on April 5 and fell on land. A complaint was lodged to local office of BREB on the same day. But the official, who received the complaint, didn`t bother to register it.BREB the very next day turned the power on again on the snapped line. Siam, 17, accidentally came in contact of the wire and was severely burned. He was admitted to Burn Unit of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors were forced to cut both of his arms to stop infection.Different news papers on April 24 carried out reports on the ordeal of Siam, prompting Supreme Court lawyer Sifat Mahmud to file a writ in this regard.The High Court today came up with the order after holding hearing on the matter and taking into cognizance the investigation report submitted by BREB.Source: BSS
