Social security for 37 lakh construction workers: Mujibul Haque

The government has taken initiatives and different projects for around 37 lakh construction workers for their social security and safety.

"As part of the social safety net, the present government has taken different projects including professional and social security measures, group insurance skim, reevaluation of wage structure, giving training and ID cards to the construction workers," State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque told the news agency.

The government, he said, has already paid two-third of group insurance money of 5,000 construction workers.

The state-owned Jibon Bima Corporation is operating the group insurance for the workers, the state minister said, adding that in case of accidental or natural death, the family of a worker will get Taka two lakh.

On the other hand, the worker who will become disable would get Taka one lakh, he added.

General Secretary of Building Construction Labour Union Abdur Razzak demanded of reevaluation of wage structure of the labour.

The prices of essential items are increasing day by day and it`s very much urgent to reevaluation of the wage structures of the labourers, he observed.

Executive Director of Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies Syed Sultan Uddin told BSS that the name of 552 construction workers have been finalized to give them ID cards.

Besides, an organization named Sromik Oikky Jote will be formed to uphold the rights of the workers, he added.
