Last moment Eid shopping at peak

With only two days more left for Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals of the Muslims, all modern and traditional shopping malls even at footpaths have been crowded by all classes` customers to buy new dresses and other necessary lifestyle items for their near and dear ones.

All city markets were seen busy with selling their commodities as customers were moving one shopping centre to another from morning to midnight. Thousands of people are purchasing lifestyle items of their own choice with huge enthusiasm.

While visiting different shopping malls and footpaths in the capital today, it was found that salesmen of different markets, footpaths, makeshift sales centers were bustling with shoppers.

"Though, huge number of people have already gone to their village home for celebrating the holy Eid-ul-Fitr with family members and relatives, but movement of the city dwellers to the shopping malls have increased at the last moment," a shop owner at Bashundhara City Shopping Mall told BSS here today.

"Sales are showing an upward trend since the last couple of days. We are passing a busy time for selling all kinds of clothes, especially cotton "Panjabi" and "shalwar"," said a manager of Anjan`s Bailey Road outlet.

"The overall sale is better than previous time," he added.

Deployment of law enforcers at different points and market places and engagement of private security men at shopping malls by the authorities concerned have ultimately created a foolproof security arrangement for businessmen as well as shoppers.

Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said they took area-wise security measures deploying additional forces while over 10,000 law enforcers will guard the capital during the Eid vacation.

"Criminals will get no scope to evade justice after committing any crime," DMP Commissioner Asaduzzaman Miah said, adding that most shopping malls were brought under closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.

He added: "The entire capital would be brought under the surveillance of the closed circuit televisions (CCTV) cameras within next two years like Singapore."

RAB spokesman Commander Mufti Muhammad Mahmud Khan said "like the previous years, we have taken all-out preparations to ensure optimum security for the smooth and jubilant celebration of Eid".

He said the elite anti-crime force brought some changes in its security arrangement giving priority to banking sector, shopping malls or establishments and residential areas.

"RAB members will also assist the private security personnel as per their requirements in a coordinated way," Khan added.
