AL didn’t compromise with Hefajat: Dr. Razzaque

Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Dr Abdur Razzaque said the ruling Awami League did not compromise with Hefajat-e-Islam, saying, "AL never ever compromises with any religiously fanatic group."

"AL would have to step forward following techniques after fighting number of hurdles to maintain the ongoing development and sprit of the Liberation War," he said while addressing a roundtable discussion on education as the chief guest here.

The discussion was jointly organized by Bangladesh Teachers` Association (BTA) and Bangladesh College-University Teachers` Association (BCUTA) at Dhaka Reporters` Unity (DRU) with President of BTA Muhammad Abu Bakar Siddique in the chair.

Among others, Prof. Mahfuza Khanom, teacher of Economics Department of Dhaka University Prof MM Akash, and BCUTA central committee vice-president Ranjit Kumar Saha, spoke on the occasion.

Referring to Hefajat mayhem on May 5 in 2013 to thwart a democratic government, Razzaque, also president of parliamentary committee on Finance Ministry said, "BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia then ordered her leaders and activists to stand besides Hefajat while the autocratic ruler HM Ershad`s party distributed foods and water among them."

"Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself discovered the way to save the nation from the devastation," he said, adding that none of the civil society men then came forward to fight the menace.

Speaking about the standard of education, Razzaque, a former minister said, "The teachers should play the main role in increasing standard of education."

He advocated for changing the multiple question system and measures for ensuring transparency in appointing teachers at school and college level, saying, "If necessary, a BCS like system should be introduced to this end."
