Oishee’s death commuted to life term

The High Court (HC) has commuted the death sentence of Oishee Rahman to life imprisonment for killing her parents in 2013.

The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and Md Jahangir Hossain on Monday passed the order after concluding hearing arguments from the counsels on the death reference and appeals.

The court also fined Oishee Tk 5,000 and awarded her six months’ additional prison time in default.

Oishee’s parents, Special Branch Inspector Mahfuzur Rahman and his wife Swapna Rahman, were found dead at their Malibagh home on August 16, 2013.

A trial court on November 12, 2015 sentenced Oishee to death for killing her father and mother. It also awarded two years of imprisonment to her friend Mizanur Rahman who had been found to be an accomplice.

In December 2015, she moved to an appeal with the High Court praying for acquittal of all charges. Her death reference also reached the court for approval.

On March 12 this year, the High Court began hearing on the appeal and death reference where it heard Oishee’s statement on her mental health on April 10, after her lawyer claimed she was suffering from mental illness at the time of the murders.
