The Supreme Court authorities removed the statue of the Greek Goddess of Justice Themis on the SC premises in the wee hours of Friday.
Sculptor Mrinal Haque, who erected the statue, was seen on the area. The statue will set up in front of the Annex Building of the court later, it is learnt.
The sculpture was removed a few days before the Ramadan is to begin and there were strong pressure on government from Islamic political parties and Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh to remove the statue.
Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, has been demanding removal of the sculpture of Themis goddess.
Claiming that the statue is hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims, the Islamic outfit said the country’s people will not tolerate it.
On 11 April, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said she did not like setting up the statue of Greek goddess Themis on the Supreme Court premises.
The statue erected in December 2016, holding the familiar sword and scales of justice in her hands, amounts to idolatry.
