The 118th birth anniversary of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is being celebrated across the country on Thursday.
Nazrul, the rebel poet of Bengali literature, was born at Churulia in Burdwan district of West Bengal on this day in 1899.
Through his poems, Nazrul had inspired people to fight against injustice and repression during the British colonial rule. His songs and poems were also a major source of inspiration for the freedom fighters during the Liberation War in 1971.
The government as well as various socio-cultural organisations have already chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the birthday of the national poet in a befitting manner.
President Md Abdul Hamid will be present as the chief guest of the central programme at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium today at 3.30pm, which will be presided over by Asaduzzaman Noor, minister of Cultural Affairs.
Chhyanaut has arranged a two day event titled “Nazrul Utsab” to celebrate Nazrul’s birthday which was inaugurated on Wednesday.
Nazrul academy has been organising various programmes from on Wednesday. There will be a series of cultural performances at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, which is open for all. The programme will commence at 5.30pm today.
A series of programmes have been undertaken to celebrate the day, including the placing of wreaths on the poet’s grave beside the Dhaka University Mosque.
