Court orders forensic test of Safat, Sadman’s cell phones

A Dhaka court on Sunday gave permission to conduct forensic examinations of five mobile phone sets seized from the prime accused in the Banani rape case, Safat Ahmed and his accomplice Sadman Sakif.Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Delwar Hossain passed the order as police filed an application seeking its permission to conduct forensic examinations of five mobile phone sets and a device of the duo.Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been given responsibility to do this.Earlier on May 18, Safat and Sadman gave confessional statements before two separate courts under section 164. They were arrested from Sylhet on May 11. The court sent them to jail after recording their confessional statements.Another key accused in the case, Abdul Halim alias Naim Ashraf, who was arrested from Munshiganj on Wednesday night are now being interrogated after taking him on seven days remand on May 18.Police claimed that Safat and Naim confessed veracity of the Banani rape incident during primary investigation.The remaining two accused driver Billal and bodyguard Abul Kalam Azad were sent to the jail upon completion of their remand. They were arrested from the city`s Banani and Wari areas on Monday.Earlier on May 6, a case was filed with Banani Police Station against the five arrested persons on charges of raping two girls in a birthday party of Safat after confining them to Raintree Hotel at Banani on March 28.According to the case details, Safat, the son of Dildar Ahmed, one of the owners of Apan Jewellers, and his friend Naim allegedly raped the two university students while Safat`s bodyguard held the girls at gunpoint and driver Billal, 26, videotaped the incident.Earlier on May 11, the two rape victims gave judicial statements before the court under Section 22 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 describing the incident.Source: BSS
