A library after the name of legendary dance maestro Udya Shankar was inaugurated at Dhaka University (DU) Dance Department today.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique formally inaugurated the `Uday Shankar Library`, set up with financial assistance of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, said a DU press release.
Indian High Commissioner Harsha Vardhan Shringla addressed the inaugural function as chief guest while DU Pro-VC (administration) Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman and Pro-VC (academic) Professor Dr Nasreen Ahmad spoke on the occasion as special guest. DU Dance Department Chairman Professor Dr Rezwana Choudhury was in the chair.
Addressing the inaugural function, Professor Arefin Siddique said the histories, literatures and cultures of Bangladesh and India are identical despite separate land boundaries.
He hoped that the Uday Sangkar Library will strengthen the ties between two neighbouring countries.
The DU vice-chancellor underscored the need for working together to develop art and culture of the two friendly countries.
Indian High Commissioner Harsha Vardhan Shringla said joint academic and research activities are being carried out between Dhaka University and Indian universities.
He said the ongoing collaboration in the development of DU Dance Department would be continuing.
