The historic Farakka Long March Day is being observed in the country on Tuesday.
Some political parties and social organizations will hold seminars and discussion meetings focusing on the significance of the day.
On this day in 1976 popular leader Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani led a massive Long March from Rajshahi towards India’s Farakka Barrage demanding its demolition.
Thousands of people took part in the long march which was stopped by the law enforcing agencies at Kansat, barely 8km away from the Farakka Barrage.
Maulana Bhashani held a public meeting at Kansat where he issued stern warning to India against diverting waters of the River Ganges during the winter.
Farakka Barrage over the River Ganges is located in the Indian state of West Bengal, roughly 16.5 kilometres (10.3 miles) from the border opposite Chapainawabganj. It has had a massive adverse impact on Bangladesh’s ecology since its implementation.
