Farmers lament half-ripe crops loss

Farmers in the haor areas are facing hardship as their half-ripe Boro paddy was submerged due to the flashfloods late March caused by incessant rain and the onrush of water from upstream.Around 39, 262 hectares of fields with Boro crops went under water in Habiganj, according to the district Agricultural Extension Department.The department sources said seven out of eight upazilas under the district is the most affected by the flashfloods this year.Boro paddy on about 20,170 hectares of land in Baniachang upazila, 6,480 hectares in Ajmeriganj, 7,050 hectares in Lakhaia, 2,780 hectares in Nabiganj, 1,695 hectares in Habiganj sadar, 1017 hectares in Bahubal and 70 hectares in Chunarughat upazila was inundated.Everyday new land in downstream areas is being submerged under the water. So the farmers with the help of family members, as labors are not available, cut their half-ripe paddy.Md Fazlur Rahman, deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension in Habiganj said, a total of 1,16,510 hectares of land was cultivated Boro paddy where the target was 1,13,600 hectares.However, the farmers fell in deep sea as their crops went under water weeks before harvest.
