120-hour hartal ends today

The 5th day of 120-hour nationwide hartal imposed by BNP-led 20-party alliance is underway with normal traffic in roads. No procession or picketing was seen in support of the hartal in the capital till 11:00am. However, law enforcers remained deployed in different parts of the capital to fend off any trouble. The alliance called the shutdown in protest of government’s repressive acts on the opposition and extrajudicial killings as well as demanding a snap national election under a non-party administration. BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the extended shutdown programme on Tuesday. Nationwide indefinite blockade is going on alongside for the 45th day. At least 90 people have been killed, over 500 injured and hundreds of vehicles torched in violence over the past month.
