United Nations (UN) Under Secretary General of Department of Field Support Atul Khare has highly lauded the outstanding contribution of Bangladesh to the field of peacekeeping.
"Professionalism and forthcoming attitude of Bangladeshi peacekeepers are really praiseworthy," he said while inaugurating a two-day workshop on "Peacekeeping Rapid Deployment" at Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York on March 30.
"The objectives of this workshop are to discuss and analyze key challenges facing the rapid deployment of a UN peacekeeping operation to develop a guidance document and related actions for future deployments," according to a message received here today.
The UN under secretary general conveyed his sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her active role and personal interest in strengthening UN efforts in peacekeeping.
Khare also highlighted high standard of maintenance of equipment by the Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
About 80 representatives from the USA, France, China, Canada, Germany, Japan, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, African Union (AU), European Union (EU), NATO and other UN organizations are participating in the workshop.
The event is being organized by the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Strategic Force Generation Cell.
Choosing Bangladesh Permanent Mission as the venue for the event reflects UN`s confidence in Bangladeshi peacekeepers and above all the sincere commitment of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The workshop is the follow up of Leaders` Summit co-hosted by Bangladesh in 2015. Currently Bangladesh is one of the leading troop and police contributing countries with about 7,000 peacekeepers in 11 different missions.
Bangladesh is also one of the countries which have pledged for rapid deployment within 60 days of notification by the United Nations, the message said.
